How often do gutters need cleaning?

For most Sydney homes, once a year is enough. Houses under large eucalypts or pines, or in bushland-adjacent streets, usually need a clean every six months — gum trees drop leaves continuously rather than seasonally. After a major storm, a check is worth booking regardless of schedule, since one good wattle branch can fill a valley.

The honest test is simple: during rain, watch the downpipe outlets. If little or no water comes out while it's pouring on the roof, something upstream is blocked. Overflow over the outer edge at a low point means a silted section that needs clearing before the weight pulls the brackets out.

Why not just leave them until there's a problem?

Because the failure mode is expensive and invisible from the ground. Standing water in a blocked gutter works its way into the fascia and eaves, and in summer the same debris load is a bushfire ember risk. Regular clearing is the cheapest roofing maintenance there is, and the included fault check catches loose brackets and early rust before they become repair jobs.
